But Zahn probably lost his chance to be a movie star when he began to take a liking to Norma Jeane. This angered Zanuck who was also developing a career-long dislike of the future Marilyn Monroe and dropped Zahn from his "future son-in-law" list- as well as from his Fox movie contract player list. Zahn taught Norma Jeane how to surf tandem on longboards and they became very close friends. She displayed great    natural ability at riding a surfboard and didn't ever mind or  tire of the often very cold water and rough California surf. (Norma Jeane was then a fitness buff and a daily jogger as well as working out with weights). Zahn came back to Hawaii in 1947, developed ideas for using surfboards as rescue          craft and then spent 11 years as a California lifeguard.
